52 Weeks of Wellness :: Boogie Down!
Monday, Feb 14, 2011
No time in week four to fit in a class – I am sure your own schedules can relate – so I was ready for a make-up! I headed to Freeport on Saturday morning to join what I was confident would be an enthusiastic Zumba class. Boy, was I right.
Happiness comes across best in a smile and nothing could describe instructor Maureen “Moe” better. Her bright smile and obvious enjoyment is what keeps us moving. Usually I have a chance to look around and soak in the atmosphere, but not so in this class. From the first beat pumping out of the (new) stereo system, we salsa, mambo, cha-cha, shake our hips, pump our arms, and even belly dance at a furious pace.
The room is full at 26 people, yet comfortably so. We take Moe’s lead and smile at one another as we boogie, turn, boogie, twirl, and boogie some more. Watching myself in the mirror reminds me that I am still the high school cheerleader of old, a little stiff in her movements, not quite loosened up yet. It doesn’t matter. Regardless of whether or not you feel you can dance, you will absolutely LOVE this experience.
From calypso music to Hawaiian beats to hip hop, we shake our hips and get the heart pumping. All ages are in attendance, some with rhythm, some without, but all having a wonderful time in this party-like atmosphere. I know I will be adding Zumba to my class line-up permanently. Hopefully you will too - now get out there and dance!
