52 Weeks of Wellness: Realigning My Body
Monday, Mar 7, 2011
The doctor told me to take a few weeks’ off from exercise to treat tendinitis in my hip. Didn’t she know that I have a BLOG to maintain!? An image to uphold!?
I took the break and now am back, albeit slowly. I figured Qigong would be the perfect reentrance, a slow series of postures designed to realign.
Defined, Qigong (pronounced chee-gong) is a Chinese system of breathing exercises, body postures and movements, and mental concentration, intended to maintain good health and control the flow of vital energy.
What appeals to me about this class is its concentration on the three qi components: spirit, mind and body. Looking back into the history of the YMCA, we know that the triangle image in the Y logo is meant to represent this trilogy and to emphasize the importance of having all three in balance in our lives.
This wellness class is slow, meditative, and perfect for anyone looking to find more balance in their own lives. Bring your patient mind to class. Lose your shoes outside the door. And revel in the stillness of your body, finding strength in the energy flowing throughout.
Class: Qigong at the Greater Portland YMCA, Studio A
Instructors: Marty
Schedule: Wednesdays, 9:00 – 10:30 am
