'Day of Caring' volunteers spruce up Casco Bay Branch
Thursday, May 20, 2010
Each year the United Way of Greater Portland organizes the Day of Caring when more than 1,000 volunteers from over 100 companies, schools and organizations donate their time and expertise to area not-for-profits. Last year, volunteers at the Casco Bay YMCA worked on establishing the Interactive Family Trail as well as painting and landscaping the grounds.
This year on May 20, the Casco Bay YMCA welcomed 38 volunteers for the United Way Day of Caring. Volunteers from L.L. Bean and Hannaford arrived at 9 a.m., and after a brief welcome and orientation to the Y, they dug in…literally! The Interactive Family Trail received a sprucing up with new wood chips and some rerouting around the retention pond. The Airnasium became a cheerier place with sidewalls being painted in bright colors. The playground was raked and sealant spread on the sidewalk. Another group worked on the Cousins River Trail, brush cutting and shoring up wet spots. The lawn was mowed, the bushes were trimmed and flowers planted. What a day!
Many thanks to all the volunteers and staff who worked so hard to make this day such a success. Thanks also to our wonderful cooks (Y members) who supplied and served delicious side dishes for lunch. Subway in Freeport donated 20 foot longs and Shaw’s provided the fruit, all very much appreciated by hungry volunteers.
If you have not seen the improvements at the Y, stop by anytime and check us out!
