My First Day in the Pool
Friday, Mar 5, 2010
Day 1: What do you think about when you’re in the pool? Well, I can tell you what I think about...for one thing, I’m trying very hard not to forget how many laps I have done. Wondering what that red stripe on the side of the pool signifies. Wondering why every clock in this place is different, and why none of them have the actual time, Wondering why I didn’t bring my goggles. Thinking that “goggles” is a pretty funny word.
The Triathlon swim is 8 laps, so I decided to see how long it would take me to swim that distance. It took me a couple of laps to get into a rhythm, if you can call it that. Mostly, I was just trying to figure out a way to kick without losing my toe ring. 15 minutes later, I had mostly breast stroked my 8 laps. My one freestyle lap was exhausting. I can see that I’m going to need some conditioning to do 8 laps of the freestyle without stopping for rest or CPR.
After a Lesson from Beth: I swam a mile! I started out with the drills that Beth gave me, and then I did a couple of easy laps that felt good. I spent a few minutes talking with Terry about mountains we have, should, or want to climb, and then I started doing freestyle laps. I got to my previous record of 20 laps and felt great, so I kept going. I really felt like I could swim forever, thanks to Beth's lessons. 36 beautiful laps-a great day!!

LOL! I loved how honest you are about what you are thinking while swimming! I was laughing!

If I were in your position, I would think about my siblings -- especially the ones that really inspire me (though they are far away.)
By the way, when I was training for a triathlon, it took me more than twenty minutes to swim the 1/4 mile... mostly swimming underwater since I naturally sink. Kathy says I could have been the designated last place finisher, too!
I'm going now to consult the AP style manual -- Kathy says the period goes outside the parentheses but I don't think so.

Thanks for doing this blog. but there's so much more I need to know! Okay . . . so how long DID it take you to swim 8 laps? And have you starting running as well?
Thanks -- and keep up the good work!

Anglea,
We missed you swimming on Saturday...oh what you missed 45 min. Today I swam with all of my parts sore from Sunday and I did 325 in 6.5 min. I dare you!! Alright, you kick my butt at running...couldn't ask for a better team mate.
