I have the parking gift. That means that I can almost always find a parking spot convenient to my destination. This is also known as Princess Parking, and it defies explanation. I happen to think that everyone has a gift like this-some of you just have the “Finding the Ripe Mango” gift or the “Whittling” gift or the “Remember All the Words to 80s Songs” gift, or some other, shall we say, less desirable gift.
My reason for mentioning this is not to gloat or in any other way annoy the parking gods. I’m just wondering if this gift may be bigger than I thought. Let me explain. On Saturday, I biked the tri course with Beth, several members of my tri class, my friend Kath, and a few others. It was a beautiful day, and we were having a spectacular time until my chain fell off on a rather steep hill (not THE hill, but one of the others). Since this is the first time this has happened to me, and since my bike was just serviced, suffice it to say that I was quite astonished. I was looking from the offending chain to my clean hands to my clean clothes, and wishing I had rubber gloves, when along came Beth. She balanced her bike on her hip and put my chain back on lickety split, wiped her hands on her bike pants, and off she went. Quite impressive. I put my clean hands on my clean handle bars and continued the ride.
My chain continued to be “crunchy”, and Kath offered to take a look at it for me when we got to the parking lot. Not being crazy, I agreed. She proceeded to wipe seventeen layers of grease off my chain, do something with an Allen wrench, squirt some stuff on the chain, and turn it over to me for a test drive while she went to wash her hands. I’m here to report that my bike is working much better and I still have clean hands. Hmmm…
