5/10 About 50 brave souls gathered to hear Paige, Julie and Beth scare the heck out of us. No, not a spook night—transition class. 5 pages of single-spaced material later, we were all sufficiently informed (and terrified) about the reality of our situation. The major points: eat normally, drink lots of water, stick to what you’ve practiced, don’t ride side by side, don’t wear iPods, don’t forget your helmet, and whatever you do-don’t touch anyone else’s stuff. Also, arrive early, pump up your tires at home, avoid fiber, remember where your bike is, and submit your swim time. We learned where to park, how to arrange our gear, who to ask for help, how to enter the pool, and where to stick our race numbers. Our tour guides approached their job with some glee. “No one told me all this stuff when I started doing tris,” Beth said with a devilish grin (see below). Of course not. If anyone knew all this stuff before they committed to the event, they’d probably never do it. At this point, most of us are so numb and exhausted that we don’t know enough to back out. Not to mention the fact that we have people coming from miles around to see us finish our first Triathlon. I guess it’s buck up time. I hope I get to be a tour guide next year. It looks like fun.
