Founded in 1853 and incorporated in 1860, the Portland YMCA is the twelfth oldest of the 2,283 YMCA's in the United States and the largest in Maine. Our historic facility is home to two pools, the beautiful Studio A classroom, a recently renovated fitness facility, a gym, and many other amenities.
There is no place quite like the Y. We are a vital part of Cumberland County; a welcoming place to learn new skills, connect with others, and access support in times of need. Our unique combination of services enriches the well-being of people of all ages and walks of life. As a nonprofit organization, we never turn anyone away who needs us. We need your financial support to continue to keep that promise.
For sisters Amanda and Kara the Y has provided a place to form valuable family memories and a much needed sense of normalcy. For years, their mother, Dilia, could be found at the Y with her daughters, working out with them or cheering them on in swim team. Tragically, that ended in the summer of 2010 after a heroic seven year battle with cancer. However, thanks to the Y and financial assistance, Amanda, Kara, and their father, Paul, continue to belong at the Y. Through relationships they have deepened with caring adults and teammates at the Y, the family feels a much needed sense of belonging and support. It is through donations to our annual support campaign that the Y is able to support this family and 5,000 other members when in need.
